The linkchecker checks only absolute URLs in pages. The linkchecker is built for checking external addresses and runs periodically.
The linkrewriter runs after the rendering of the HTML. It parses the HTML and validates all relative URLs (against the repository) and if they are no longer valid, they are removed on the publisher or shown as broken links on the author .
